🌸 Manuka is a common shrub that is dotted around NZ. Traditionally used by Maori for many ailments, and prized for the honey that the bee makes from its flowers.
🐝 We think of it’s antibacterial and antifungal properties in relation to the honey, but did you know that the leaves can be used to make a hot tea? (to either inhale the vapours or drink) It clears the airways and can alleviate symptoms of a cold.
🌱 You could mix in some other herbs such as peppermint and elderflower, and add a little bit of Manuka honey for that sore throat.
🐝 Its important to not take with your meals, as the tannins in the plant can impair your absorption of minerals – and you need to be well nourished when fighting a cold.
🐝 Manuka looks quite similar to the Kanuka. You can tell the difference by seeing if the plant still has the little seed capsules on it. As the saying goes ‘Kanuka drops it’s nuts’ 🤭
🐝 Don’t worry if you accidently pick leaves from the Kanuka – it has very similar properties if being used to treat a cold – with the added benefit of being antiviral too.
